This page contains some notes on a family whose origins we are researching. Some families we know more about than others, but we hope that by publishing this summary here we can make contact and exchange data with people who can help to complete the picture.
The Dawe line we know most about originated in Devon, but later generations were found in Liverpool. We are interested in the following generations of people who bore this surname:
John Dawe (no details known) and Mary Adams (1787 - 1850)
Thomas Dawe (1815 - 1875) and Elizabeth Triggs (1815 - 1894)
Mary Selina Dawe (1844 - 1924) and George Thomas Dawe (c1833 - 1920)
Robert Edward Dawe (1872 - 1954) and Jane Poland (born 1873)
Ivy Dawe (1908 - 1988) and William Griffiths Eaton (1903 - 1963)
Mary Selina Dawe's family moved from Ashburton in Devon to Devonport in the 1840s. By the time Mary Selina married George Thomas Dawe in 1871, both were living in Liverpool. The surname is sometimes spelt Daw, especially in earlier records. We also have information on the related Triggs, Poland and Eaton families.
George Thomas Dawe is something of a mystery. In census returns he gives his place of birth as Wells, Somerset, and his marriage certificate gives his father's name as James Dawe. We cannot find a baptism in Somerset, nor have we found any record of him before the 1871 census, when he was in Liverpool. We are hoping that someone can tell us more about this line, or can point us in the right direction to continue our own research.
