The Gloyn Family in Devon

This page contains some notes on a family whose origins we are researching. Some families we know more about than others, but we hope that by publishing this summary here we can make contact and exchange data with people who can help to complete the picture.

This Gloyn family lived in Devon, originally in the area around Holsworthy. The surname is spelt Gloyne in many records. We are interested in the following generations of people who bore this surname:

John Gloyn and Joan Gilbert (married 1714)
Francis Gloyn (1715 - 1788) and Grace Martin (buried 1785)
James Gloyn (1758 - 1829) and Elizabeth Jordan (1765 - 1840)
William Gloyn (1792 - 1857) and Elizabeth Sherrell (1793 - 1841)
Mary Ann Gloyn (1829 - 1893) and Simon Willcock (1825 - 1873)

James Gloyn was baptised in Cookbury and was married in Pyworthy, both near Holsworthy. We believe that his father was the Francis Gloyn who was baptised in Cookbury in 1715. James Gloyn, a dairyman, later moved from Pyworthy to Plymouth, where his descendants were all found. We know quite a lot about the Willcock family and we have also researched the Sherrell and Jordan connections.

Some of the names above are linked to the corresponding record in the on-line family tree. When you click on a link, the linked record will be displayed in a separate window. There you can see the family relationships as we understand them, together with notes on what we have found in parish registers, census returns and other records.
