The Clarke Family in Devon

This page contains some notes on families whose origins we are researching. Some families we know more about than others, but we hope that by publishing this summary here we can make contact and exchange data with people who can help to complete the picture.

We are interested in three different groups of people who bore this surname. The three families are almost certainly unrelated, although all come from Devon. The first lived in the Honiton area, where we have traced the following generations:

Edward Clarke and Joan Lee (married 1672)
Edward Clarke (1676 - 1748/9) and Christian Thomas (1679 - 1728)
Edward Clarke (1709/10 - 1790) and Susanna Wood (1707/8 - 1754)
Catherine Clarke (1747 - 1826)
Robert Clarke (1773 - 1866) and Elizabeth Harris (c1767 - 1850)
William Clarke (1804 - 1861) and Mary Ann Kibbey (c1812 - 1897)
Hannah Clarke (1839 - 1917) and John Warren (1832 - 1902)

The earlier generations all lived in Farway, near Honiton in Devon. Robert Clarke's children were all born in Cotleigh, also near Honiton, and those we have traced remained in the Honiton area. William Clarke had moved to Awliscombe at the time of his marriage. This site contains details of all of William's children and most of Robert's. We have also traced many of the Warren, Kibbey and Wood connections.

The second Clarke family lived in Kings Nympton, where we have found the following generations:

George Clarke (buried 1742) and Susanna Hall (no details known)
Anthony Clarke (1717/8 - 1809) and Mary Lane (1724 - 1795)
Elizabeth Clarke (1753 - 1814) and William Hulland (1751 - 1821)

All the information we have found on this family comes from the parish of Kings Nympton, where we have also researched some of the Hulland and Lane connections. Unfortunately our researches are limited by a gap in the Kings Nympton records before 1700.

We also have links to a third Clarke family found in Beer Ferrers in the far west of Devon, although we know very little about them apart from the following names and dates.

William Clarke (buried 1711) and Agnes Clarke (buried 1730)
Pascha Clarke (1693 - 1771) and Richard Creber (1693 - 1750)

Many of the names above are linked to the corresponding record in the on-line family tree. When you click on a link, the linked record will be displayed in a separate window. There you can see the family relationships as we understand them, together with notes on what we have found in parish registers, census returns and other records.

Please contact Chris and Linda Warren if you have a connection with any of these this families
