The Jeffreys (or Jeffries) Family

This page contains some notes on a family whose origins we are researching. At present we are uncertain about their early history, but we hope that by publishing this summary here we can make contact and exchange data with people who can tell us more or who can point us in the right direction to continue our own research.

The Jeffreys (or Jeffries) family lived in Barnes in Surrey, but are also connected to Fulham, just across the river. We think that earlier generations probably came from Wiltshire. We are interested in the following people who bore this surname (which is spelt in several different ways in official records):

Thomas Jeffreys and Ann Harding (married in 1761)
Thomas Jeffreys (1771 - 1862) and Catherine Stoner (c1771 - 1858)
Thomas Jeffreys (c1795 - 1881) and Sarah Phillips (c1793 - 1847)
Charlotte Jeffreys (1822 - 1900) and Thomas Liddon (1820 - 1854)

Thomas Jeffreys married Sarah Phillips in 1813 in Barnes, Surrey, where they remained for the rest of their lives. Thomas's place of birth is given as Fulham, but his baptism has not been found there. Also living in Barnes were an older Thomas Jeffreys, born near Chippenham in Wiltshire, and his wife Catherine (formerly Stoner), born in Fulham. It seems likely that they were the parents of Thomas junior, but we have not yet proved this relationship. We have also found a Sarah Phillips baptised in Mortlake, but this identification is also unproven. Charlotte Jeffreys moved to London, and married Robert John Percival after the death of Thomas Liddon.

Some of the names above are linked to the corresponding record in the on-line family tree. When you click on a link, the linked record will be displayed in a separate window. There you can see the family relationships as we understand them, together with notes on what we have found in parish registers, census returns and other records.
