This page contains some notes on a family whose origins we are researching. Some families we know more about than others, but we hope that by publishing this summary here we can make contact and exchange data with people who can help to complete the picture.
The Markey family originated in Wiltshire, but our branch later moved to Devon. We are interested in the following generations of people who bore this surname:
William Markey (c1690 - 1752) and Mary Meaden (1694 - 1764)
Philip Markey (1726 - 1766) and Grace Kelloway (1723 - 1788)
John Markey (1750 - 1817) and Elizabeth Rutley (c1744 - 1838)
William Markey (1778 - 1851) and Ann Rutley (1778 - 1867)
Mary Ann Markey (1812 - 1888) and William Venn (1809 - 1880)
The Markey family lived in the area around Stourton and Zeals, in Wiltshire but right on the border with both Somerset and Dorset. We have been unable to establish whether or not the two Rutley lines are connected. Elizabeth Rutley was living in Kilmington (then in Somerset but now in Wiltshire) and Ann Rutley's father came from Gillingham in Dorset. William and Ann Markey moved from Wiltshire to High Bray in Devon around 1805.
