The Markey Family in Wiltshire

This page lists those members of the Markey family whose origins we are researching. Entries in italics are inferred or uncertain, or have been supplied by other researchers and not personally verified by us. The list does not include children believed to have died in infancy. The Markey family originated in Wiltshire, but our branch later moved to Devon. Please contact Chris Warren if you feel that the family listed here is connected with your own research.

The Markey family lived in the area around Stourton and Zeals, in Wiltshire but right on the border with both Somerset and Dorset. We think that the family came from Kilmington, then in Somerset, but the parish records for the relevant period have not survived. Our direct ancestors moved from Wiltshire to High Bray in Devon around 1805. Other branches remained in Stourton and other nearby parishes in Wiltshire and Somerset. We have also attempted to trace other families in Kilmington who may be related (see foot of page). Much of our information on these families was supplied or confirmed by Jackie Markey, who has collected a large amount of Markey data from Wiltshire, Somerset and Dorset.

Markey Families in Kilmington

The families listed below lived in Kilmington. We think that they are related to our own Markey line, but we have been unable to prove the connection. The only baptism of the earliest generation found in the surviving parish registers is that of John Markey, son of John and Eleanor Markey. We have seen a probate record which tells us that Edward Markey's mother was also named Eleanor. The family relationships are also uncertain in a few other places. Where baptism records are missing we have indicated below the most likely line of descent.
