The Sherrell Family in Devon

This page lists those members of the Sherrell family whose origins we are researching. Entries in italics are inferred or uncertain, or have been supplied by other researchers and not personally verified by us. The list does not include children known to have died in infancy. Although we use the spelling Sherrell below, many other variations of the name appear in early records, including Shirrel, Sherril, Sherrill, Sherwell and Sherwill. The Sherrell family lived in south-west Devon, in and around Plymouth. Much of our information comes from the parishes of St Budeaux and Pennycross. We have traced the line back to the marriage of William Sherrell and Sarah Martyn in 1739, but we are uncertain of their origins. A William Sherwell was baptised in Stoke Damerel in 1712, the son of Samuel and Margaret, but there are gaps in some of the older registers and this could be a different person with a similar name.
